How to prune Oncidium

How to prune Oncidium

Before pruning

Does the newly bought Oncidium need to be pruned? This depends on the shape of the plant. If the branches of the plant are growing healthily and have good light transmittance, no excessive treatment is needed.

Before pruning Oncidium, make sure the soil in the pot is dry to avoid bacterial or fungal infection during the pruning process.

Pruning methods

Prepare disinfectants (alcohol, clean cloth), disinfect the scissors, and place them in a cool place to dry before pruning.

Prune the oncidium spike and cut off the growing flower stalks. According to the growth of the plant, cut off the weak and poorly growing branches to avoid consuming too much nutrients.

Overcrowded and withered branches should also be cut off. Oncidium has many flowers and they do not bloom at the same time. When some flowers bloom, some have already withered or turned brown, so these withered flowers must be cut off in time. Avoid affecting flowering.

The rhizomes need to be pruned when repotting. Oncidium has fleshy roots. Excessive watering during growth or stuffy soil will damage the roots and affect growth. Therefore, it is necessary to prune the roots in time in combination with repotting and repotting.

During the pruning process, to ensure safety, you can disinfect the tools after each pruning.

After pruning Oncidium

Check the growth status of Oncidium regularly. It is important to understand that the purpose of pruning is to cut off poorly growing, or yellowing or browning branches and leaves, kill any diseased leaves hidden in the plant, and reduce unhealthy factors in the plant. If the plant wilts after pruning, it means that you have pruned it too much or disinfected it improperly, and you need to remedy it in time.
