How to store gladiolus bulbs

How to store bulbs

The bulbs of gladiolus will have a natural dormancy period of 2 months after the flowers fall in autumn. At this time, the bulbs must be well preserved to ensure that they can germinate normally after dormancy. Under normal circumstances, once winter is over, the bulbs can be planted and will germinate in early spring in February. However, the northern region is relatively cold, so it can be planted in March or April. During this period, attention should be paid to ventilation and dryness.

Storage at room temperature: Wrap the bulbs directly with newspaper or net bag and place them in a cool, ventilated corner.

Low temperature storage: Store the bulbs in the refrigerator.

Gladiolus bulb seed saving

The bulbs of gladiolus are alphabetical bulbs, and many small bulbs will grow around the big bulb. When storing the bulbs in autumn and winter, the small bulbs can be broken off and planted in spring. Because gladiolus corms degenerate relatively quickly, rejuvenation is mainly achieved through propagation of bulbils.

Things to note when saving gladiolus seeds

Try to use new soil for planting every year. If you are growing it in the open air, try to change the location.

The planting depth should be at least 5 to 8 cm to ensure the healthy development of the new bulbs.

The small bulbs harvested in autumn can be sown in the spring of the following year, and new bulbs can be harvested in October. However, it is best to choose soybean or pea-sized bulbils for seed preservation.
