How to prune orchids

Pruning orchid leaves

During the growth of orchids, the leaves should be pruned frequently. When old leaves turn yellow, they should be cut off in time to facilitate ventilation. Some leaves with dry tips should also be cut off. In particular, leaves infested with diseases and insects need to be removed in time to avoid infection.

Pruning orchid stems

After the flowers fade, the flower stems should be cut off in time. The safest way is to cut the flower stems two or three centimeters above the surface of the pot for the first time. After a period of time, the remaining old stems can be cut off after they wither. This can prevent infection of the new wound.

If conditions permit, you can also use potassium permanganate solution for disinfection and cut off the old stems at one time.

Trimming the roots

Although the roots of orchids have no ornamental value, they are essential to the growth of orchids. First, remove the plant from the pot, shake off some of the soil, cut off broken roots, old roots, and diseased roots, disinfect and dry them, and then replant them. During this process, be careful to avoid causing unnecessary injuries.

Orchid pruning precautions

disinfect

Be sure to disinfect the scissors with medicine or alcohol before pruning. If you are careful enough, you can disinfect them after each pruning to avoid wound infection.

When pruning, try to make the cut as slanted as possible, the sharper the better.

Patient and meticulous

Before pruning, be sure to check whether the leaves at the cut are yellow or green. Do not cut them together, and do not cut off healthy leaves. Don't be impatient, and don't cut it casually.
