How to dwarf dahlias

How to dwarf dahlias

Choose a dwarf variety

Plants also have genetic characteristics, so you must understand this clearly when planting them. Choose dwarf varieties and avoid tall varieties, otherwise it will be difficult to control them after you bring them home.

Dwarfing cuttings

If you want the dahlia to grow smaller, you can plant it yourself in a pot by cuttings. Choose axillary buds or bud-bearing branches of the dahlia mother plant for cuttings. Using such branches for cuttings can limit the plant height and is also beneficial for dwarfing the plant.

Control water and fertilizer

During the growth period of the plant, it is necessary to control water and fertilizer to avoid rapid growth of the plant. Regarding watering, it is better to water in the morning, and avoid watering heavily in the evening to prevent the plant from growing too tall. Watering should be moderate, enough to keep the branches, leaves and tender shoots stretching naturally.

In terms of fertilization, we should control the application of nitrogen fertilizer and increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, and pay attention to the amount, not too much or too concentrated. Generally, quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer is applied in the early stage of growth. In the later stage, you can choose to apply foliar fertilizer or spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate aqueous solution on the leaves.

Repotting curved roots

Dahlias need to be repotted several times during their growth. When repotting, you should cut off some of the excess roots and bury the stem disk in the potting soil to promote the growth of adventitious roots at the stem nodes. At the same time, pay attention to water control and stun the seedlings to achieve the purpose of dwarfing.
