How to cut, harvest and preserve the leaves of ornamental asparagus fern

Cut leaf harvesting

The supply time of asparagus fern cut leaves is mainly concentrated from June to October every year. Cut leaf harvesting also mainly takes place at this stage. The part of the asparagus fern that is harvested for leaf cuttings is the leaf-like branches of the asparagus fern. When they expand horizontally and turn completely green, they can be harvested, and the operation can be carried out throughout the day. Place the picked leaves in a cool place temporarily and pre-cool them as soon as possible, which can extend the shelf life of the cut asparagus fern leaves.

Cut leaf grading

The harvested leaves should be graded on the premise that they have typical characteristics of the species, are free of damage and pollution, and have good visual effects: the length of the first-grade cut leaves is about 60 cm; the length of the second-grade cut leaves is about 50 cm; the length of the third-grade cut leaves is about 40 cm.

Management of Cut-Leaf Asparagus Fern Freshness

The cut leaves can be stored in an environment with a relative humidity of 90% to 95% and a temperature of 2 to 4°C. Usually, you should spray water to keep it moist and put it into water as soon as possible. If it can be placed in a bright place without direct sunlight, it will help maintain the quality of the asparagus fern leaves and keep them fresh for a long time.

Storage period

As long as they are not exposed to direct sunlight and are watered in time, the leaves of asparagus fern can usually be preserved for 3 to 5 days and should not be viewed first. If the time is too long, the leaves of asparagus fern will lack freshness. You can spray the leaves appropriately to extend the time by 1 to 2 days.
