How to fertilize succulents

How to fertilize succulents

Common fertilizers

In the past, the main sources of organic fertilizers in households were cake fertilizer, bone meal, rice bran, various scraps, etc., some of which were decomposed and fermented. The advantages are that the fertilizer is released slowly, the fertilizer effect is long, it is easy to obtain, and it is not easy to cause root burn; the disadvantages are that the nutrient content is low, it has a bad smell, and it is easy to stain the leaves of the plant. Inorganic fertilizers include ammonium sulfate, urea, etc., which people usually call chemical fertilizers. Their advantages are that they are quick to work, easily absorbed by plants, and high in nutrients; their disadvantages are that they can easily damage the plants if used improperly.

Reasonable fertilization

Succulents have different growth stages and types, and have different requirements for fertilizers.

spring

Early spring is the transition stage when succulents end their dormant period and enter a rapid growth period. Fertilization is beneficial to promoting the growth of succulents.

summer

During the high temperature period of midsummer from July to August, the plants are in a semi-dormant state and fertilization should be suspended.

autumn

At the beginning of autumn, the temperature drops slightly and the plants begin to recover. You can continue to fertilize them until the end of autumn, but stop fertilizing them to prevent the plants from growing too vigorously. The new bulbs are tender and easily damaged by frost.

winter

No fertilizer is generally applied in winter. The frequency of fertilization for succulents during the growing season is once every 2-3 weeks, such as the genera of Chandelure, Aglaonema, Aeonium, etc. Most succulents should be fertilized once a month; a few species, such as the genera of Parallelism, should be fertilized once every 4-6 weeks, and the genera of Portulaceae and Pachyphyllum should be fertilized once every 6-8 weeks.
