How to grow magnolia

Leaf picking

Magnolias grown indoors can be taken out for cultivation for a period of time between the Spring Equinox and Qingming Festival each year, mostly on cloudy or overcast days. The 2-3 days after taking them out are the time for the magnolias to adapt to the outdoor environment.

Then remove the old leaves on the plant and keep only a few young leaves on the branches to promote the growth of new shoots. After that, every time the flowers fall, a small amount of old leaves need to be picked off to save the nutrients needed for the growth of new branches and the germination of flower buds.

During the growing period of magnolia, necessary and moderate pinching can also control the balanced distribution of nutrients and promote the growth of side branches.

nutrient

Due to the characteristics of magnolia's long flowering period, large flower shape and large number of flowers, it requires more nutrients for growth.

Appropriate fertilization is needed to provide sufficient nutrients for its growth, so as to ensure that the magnolia can bloom lush and beautiful flowers when the normal flowering period arrives.

When potting, apply sufficient base fertilizer. During the flowering period from May to July, fertilize every 5-7 days with organic liquid fertilizer mainly containing phosphorus and potassium (rotted cake fertilizer water).

We must adhere to the principle of "applying small amounts of fertilizer frequently". Fertilizers can be prepared to be light at first and then concentrated. Avoid applying raw fertilizers to avoid burning the roots.

In addition, foliar fertilization should be carried out every 7-10 days, by spraying 0.5% concentration of plant growth hormone and 0.3% concentration of potassium dihydrogen phosphate.

Watering

Magnolia roots are fleshy, so the amount of water must be properly controlled.

Therefore, water the plants once a day from early summer to late autumn to keep the soil moderately moist. Especially during the dry "dog days", water the plants once in the morning and evening. The air humidity should also be increased by spraying water on the leaves and pots.

If you use tap water for watering, you should be careful to prevent the soil from becoming alkaline. If the leaves turn yellow, apply ferrous sulfate water or vinegar water with a concentration of about 0.7% to water the roots in time.

During rainy spring weather, avoid water accumulation in flower pots to prevent root rot.

illumination

Magnolia needs sufficient light to grow. During the growing period, it should be placed on a balcony or other sunny place with long daylight and strong light. During the flowering period, more attention should be paid to light maintenance, and more than 6 hours of light time should be ensured every day.

Long-term maintenance in the shade is not conducive to the normal flowering of magnolia. Moderate shading is only required during the "dog days" when there is long periods of direct sunlight, usually between 12-16 o'clock every day.

At this time, the ground temperature should also be cooled down. The specific method is to spray cool water on the ground. At the same time, the humidity of the air will be increased to artificially create a suitable environment for the growth of magnolia.
