How to propagate Nepenthes by cuttings

Cutting

The first thing to do is to cut the branches. The branches must have buds, that is, a leaf. This will ensure the growth of new branches and keep the plant moist.

There are usually two or three buds on the branches. Then cut off part of the leaves on the branches, that is, cut off one-half to two-thirds of the leaves perpendicular to the veins. This step is very important. Don't fail in cuttings because you are reluctant to part with the tender green leaves. But don't cut them off completely either, because the leaves themselves consume nutrients but can also produce the nutritional hormones needed by the roots. If there are no leaves, cuttings will never be successful.

Treating the incision

When cutting branches, try to keep the cut smooth, use sharper scissors, and cut vertically. When cutting branches, do not cut them at an angle to reduce the area of ​​damaged branches. If the cut is too large, it will be easily infected by microorganisms.

Wait until the cut branches are dry before cutting them, which usually takes 1 to 2 days.

Cuttings

It is best to use new soil as the culture soil for cuttings to reduce bacterial infection. Either sphagnum moss or peat will do.

Insert the branch into the soil. When the branch has only one bud, the bud should be exposed above the ground. If there are two or three buds, the lowest bud should be inserted into the soil. In order to make the plant grow better, you can apply a little rooting agent on the cut before cutting, which can not only increase the survival rate but also reduce the probability of infection.

Maintenance

✔After the cuttings are completed, place the container in a high temperature and humid environment. You can cover it with a plastic bag to increase the humidity.

✔Place the cuttings in a well-lit area, avoiding direct sunlight on the branches to prevent excessive temperatures and burns.

✔The cuttings are greatly affected by temperature. It is best to place them in an environment with the same growth temperature as the mother plant. If conditions permit, they can be placed directly near the mother plant for maintenance.
