How to propagate freesia

How to propagate freesia

1. Seed propagation

Cut flower varieties are usually propagated by seeds. After the seeds mature in May and June, they should be collected and sown in time. The seeds will not dormant and should be sown immediately after harvesting. When sowing, control the temperature at 15-20 ℃ and ensure the environment is dark. It will germinate after 21 days. After sowing, when the seedlings grow 5 to 7 leaves, the above-ground parts will gradually turn yellow and the bulbs will enter a dormant period. At this time, you must be careful to protect the bulbs. They can bloom if they are cultivated again after dormancy!

Specific method:

Harvest the seeds of the year in June and sow them in the greenhouse immediately. Maintain the temperature at 15-20℃ and water them thoroughly. (Try to choose a larger container) After one month, the seeds will germinate and sprout one after another. Control the temperature at 15~18℃ and apply enough water and fertilizer. In the second year, the diameter of the bulblets can reach more than 1 cm, and they can be directly transplanted and planted, and they can bloom in the same year!

2. Bulb propagation

4 to 6 sub-bulbs can grow around the big bulb, and the plant can usually be divided after 3 to 4 years of growth. Here are the steps:

During the summer dormancy period, dig out the bulbs, break off the daughter bulbs directly with your hands, and store the mother bulbs and daughter bulbs separately, waiting for sowing in autumn. In early August, plant the bulbs in a flowerpot, apply enough base fertilizer, and cover the bulbs with 1 to 1.5 cm of soil when planting. Water thoroughly and it will sprout and grow after 10 days. In May of the second year, the bulblets grow up and develop into seed bulbs. If cultivated as a cut flower variety, the bulbs must grow to more than 8 cm to ensure the quality of the cut flowers.
