How does lotus survive the winter?

Winter management:

November to March of the following year is the dormant period of bowl lotus. At this stage, except for the lotus roots that overwinter in the mud, all other parts are dead. Therefore, we must pay attention to preventing the soil from freezing in winter. The best overwintering temperature for lotus roots grown in lotus mud is 3-10°C.

In southern my country, it can overwinter in the open field without protection. The North needs to take steps to protect it.

Protective measures

Covering method

Place a layer of plastic film and dead grass at the bottom of the flowerpot, about 3 cm thick. Use the same method to cover the top of the pot with plastic film and dead grass. The upper and lower layers of plastic film mainly play the role of protecting against rain and snow and keeping warm. The thickness will be appropriately increased as the local temperature drops.

Wet Mud Winter Storage

Store the lotus roots in the cellar over the winter. Before winter, turn the pot over and take out the lotus roots. Try to keep the mud on the roots and do not break the connecting surfaces between the lotus roots to avoid infection. Then put it into the cellar and place it in the prepared jar. Cover the jar with a thin layer of grass. Check frequently during storage and sprinkle water on the tank surface to keep it moist.

The method of hiding lotus root in mud

The indoor temperature should reach above 10℃ and prepare a large tank. Place 15cm of lotus root and mud in the jar, fill with 15cm thick sand, stack them at intervals until they are 5cm away from the jar mouth, and then fill with water. Keep the tank well hydrated and in a muddy lake shape.

Deepwater placement

Put the lotus root in a relatively small flowerpot (as long as it can hold the lotus root), place the pot in the deep water of the pond, and do not let the pot float to the surface. Wait until spring to fish it out. This method is very safe, but deep water ponds are hard to find and salvage is difficult.
