How to propagate hydrangeas by bud grafting

How to propagate hydrangeas by bud grafting

Step 1: Bud cultivation

In spring, keep the pruned hydrangeas in an environment of 25°C. In about half a month, many small buds will grow on the plant.

Prepare several small flower pots (shallower) filled with sandy soil. When the tender shoots grow to about 2 cm, leave the plants to grow into branches, break off the remaining side buds and insert them in the flower pots.

The side buds on the plant grow at different rates. Do not break off buds that are too small, just let them grow on the branches.

Step 2: Maintenance after insertion

Spray water every time you cut the sprouts. Try to use a small sprayer to avoid overwatering.

Place the planted flower pots in a bright but not direct sunlight place, control the temperature between 15 ~ 25 ℃, and spray water once in the morning and evening every day. When the sunlight is strong, spray the surrounding environment appropriately to ensure good germination humidity.

If conditions permit, the plants can be placed in a small shed covered with plastic film to ensure sufficient air humidity and increase the survival rate.

Step 3: Rooting

With normal care, most of the sprouts will take root in about four weeks. The young buds will grow many leaves. When the leaves have stretched out and opened, it means that the root system can ensure the independent growth of the buds. At this time, they can be divided and moved to a flowerpot with a depth of 15 to 20 cm.
