When does Epiphyllum bloom?

Flowering period

Epiphyllum blooms in summer and autumn, usually from June to October. The blooming time of Epiphyllum is in the evening. After 8 to 9 o'clock, the flower tube slowly rises and the purple outer coat slowly opens. It blooms for about 3 to 5 hours, and then the corolla will close and the flower will soon wither. The blooming time is very short.

Flower shape

The flowers of Epiphyllum are large white flowers that grow solitary on the sides of branches and are funnel-shaped. The flowers are large, about 25-30 cm long. When blooming, the receptacle is green, the petals and filaments are white, with light yellow anthers and yellow-white styles.

Reasons for not blooming

Some flower lovers complain that Epiphyllum does not bloom, and these rare flowers are even less likely to be seen.

In fact, there are three reasons why Epiphyllum does not bloom. One is excessive fertilization, which causes the plants to have excess nutrients, resulting in excessive growth and affecting flowering. The second is excessive shading. In summer, Epiphyllum needs shade, but an overly shady environment will affect the differentiation and formation of flower buds, causing the Epiphyllum to not bloom. The third point is sunlight exposure. Too strong sunlight will cause the abnormal stems to shrink and turn yellow, affecting the growth and blooming of Epiphyllum.

Flowering period control of Epiphyllum

Generally speaking, proper application of fertilizer and water and maintaining a lower temperature when the flowers bloom can prolong the flowering period, sometimes allowing them to continue blooming until the early morning.

Another method is to make the night-blooming cereus bloom during the day. When the Epiphyllum grows buds but before it blooms, move it to a dark room or cover it with black plastic film during the day to keep it away from sunlight. At night, illuminate it with light so that it is under light. After doing this for 7-8 days, the Epiphyllum will bloom during the day as people wish.
