The difference between poplar catkins and willow catkins

The difference between poplar catkins and willow catkins

1. Difference

1. Different sources: Poplar fluff grows from poplar trees and is the seeds of poplar trees. It will fly out after the poplar flowers mature and crack. Poplar flowers do not have nectar glands and cannot secrete nectar to attract insects to spread pollen. They can only spread pollen with the help of wind and are wind-pollinated flowers. Catkins grow from willow trees. Although they are similar, they come from a different source. They are the seeds of the willow tree. Willow is a unisexual flower without perianth, but it has nectaries that can use nectar to attract insects to spread pollen, making it an insect-pollinated flower.

2. Different time of appearance: Poplar fluff usually appears first and can last for a week. Willow catkins appear later, usually after poplar catkins.

3. Different texture: Poplar fluff has stronger cohesion, can be clumped together, and feels like cotton. The fibers of willow catkins are relatively fine, dispersed and soft.

4. Different propagation distances: Poplar fluff is mostly in clumps, heavier, and spreads over a shorter distance. Willow catkins are lighter and can be carried farther by the wind.

2. How to suppress flying catkins

The appearance of poplar and willow catkins will have a certain impact on people's lives. To solve the problem of flying catkins, you can just cut them down and plant other trees that don't fly catkins instead. You can also inject drugs to inhibit them from producing seeds and avoid the appearance of flying catkins. You can also plant only male trees, so that they will not produce seeds or fly catkins.
