How to grow peony, cultivation method of potted peony

1. Suitable soil

When growing peonies, you must choose a sunny place with high terrain and good drainage. Do not plant them in low-lying areas where water is easily accumulated. Loose and fertile soil is more conducive to root growth, and good drainage can also prevent the roots from being flooded and rotted. For home breeding, you need to mix garden soil, river sand and decomposed pine needles in a ratio of 5:3:2.

2. Sufficient light

Peony is a light-loving plant. During its growth process, it is necessary to ensure sufficient light. This is not only beneficial to the differentiation of flower buds, but also allows the plant to photosynthesize better, thereby accumulating nutrients. Potted plants should generally be placed in sunny places, such as south-facing balconies and windowsills. In the summer, they need to be properly shaded to avoid being exposed to the sun.

3. Proper watering

Peony itself has a certain degree of drought resistance and fleshy roots, so its demand for water is not very high. The soil cannot be too moist during its growth, especially there must be no stagnant water. Usually, relatively sufficient water should be provided before and after flowering, and watering should be stopped during the flowering period. If the climate is humid, watering should usually be delayed.

4. Supplemental fertilizer

When planting peonies, you must first apply enough base fertilizer to it, so that you basically only need to apply top dressing three times a year. The first top dressing is in March and April, usually with manure combined with cake fertilizer and superphosphate. The second fertilization is in late April, and the third is in November, mostly with manure. For potted plants, fertilizer can be added regularly during the growing period.
