What kind of orchids are good to grow indoors in the north and how to grow them

1. What kind of orchids are good to grow indoors in the north?

The northern region is generally dry, the soil is alkaline, and the temperature is generally low in winter. Even if there is heating indoors, it will be very dry and difficult to ventilate. Therefore, it is suitable for cultivating orchid varieties that are relatively cold-resistant, adaptable, and have low soil requirements. In summary, Jianlan and Molan are two types of orchids that can be grown in northern regions. They have strong adaptability and are relatively cold-resistant, and can survive temperatures as low as minus two degrees Celsius. You just need to pay attention to controlling the amount of water.

2. How to breed

Watering: When growing orchids in the north, you need to adjust the watering method according to seasonal changes. In spring, orchids enter their growing season as the temperature rises and can be watered once every one or two days. Summer is also the peak growth period for orchids. You can water them once in the morning or evening. During the rainy season, you should pay attention to controlling the amount of watering according to the moisture of the potting soil. In autumn, the temperature starts to drop, so you need to reduce the frequency of watering and water the plants once every two or three days. The temperature is very low in winter, so you can water them once every five to seven days. However, Jianlan and Molan are more cold-resistant and can still grow in winter, so you can give them a little more water.

Light: Orchids generally prefer a cool environment and do not like direct sunlight. Therefore, in April and May, you can let the orchid see the sun before 9 am, and after mid-May, you should place the orchid in a cool and ventilated place for maintenance. In winter, you can keep orchids in a sunny place so that the plants can receive more light, which can promote the differentiation of flower buds.

Fertilization: When fertilizing orchids, do not use concentrated fertilizers, only thin fertilizers. Newly planted orchids do not need to be fertilized in the first year. Start fertilizing after the Qingming Festival of the second year and continue until the Beginning of Autumn. When caring for orchids in the north, you can apply decomposed pancake fertilizer water once or twice a month. Before each fertilization, you need to control the water for two days and wait until the soil in the pot is somewhat dry before applying fertilizer. Water once the next morning after fertilizing.
