How to propagate elm trees? Can they be propagated by seeds?

1. How to breed

1. Cutting propagation: Cuttings can be carried out after the leaves fall in autumn or before budding in spring. Before cutting, you need to apply base fertilizer, disinfect the soil and improve the survival rate. In autumn, cuttings should be taken as soon as they are harvested, cut and planted. In spring, cuttings can be stored in winter or planted as soon as they are harvested. It is best to choose branches larger than 0.5 cm and graft them into cuttings 15-20 cm long. The upper cut should be flat, and the lower part near the bud should be cut into a horse ear shape, which is conducive to faster rooting of the cuttings. When grafting, the row spacing should be 30cm and the plant spacing should be 20cm. The scion should be slightly exposed above the ground, and then the soil should be covered and compacted and then watered thoroughly.

2. Grafting propagation: In mid-March when the weather is clear and the buds are budding, cut a scion about 5 cm long with 2-3 full buds at a smooth part about 2m from the rootstock. Cut the bottom of the scion into a horse ear shape and insert it vertically between the cortex and the xylem. Then wrap it tightly with plastic cloth to leave no air.

2. Can it be propagated by seeds?

Can be propagated by seeds. You can use seeds from healthy mother trees that are 15-30 years old, and they can be harvested when they turn yellow-white. When propagating by seeds, choose sandy loam land with water, good drainage and thick soil as the nursery. The land should be carefully prepared and sufficient base fertilizer should be applied. After shallow plowing, sufficient bottom water should be irrigated before sowing. The sowing method can be ridge sowing or ridge sowing. Then in mid-April, sow the seeds promptly after drying them in the shade or on a cloudy day. When sowing, it is best to leave a row spacing of about 30 cm, and then cover with about 1 cm of soil and tamp it down.
