Bowl lotus is a very popular green potted plant . When planted in a small container, the flowers will be very delicate and have high ornamental value. So which month is suitable for planting water lilies? Let’s learn more about it below.

Which month is suitable for planting water lilies?

Bowl lotus can be planted all year round as long as the temperature is around 15°C. However, the best planting time in the south is early March each year. The temperature in the early spring in the north is still unstable, so you can wait until April to May to sow. The temperature in the south will gradually rise after March until June or July. After several months of growth, the rhizomes and plants of the water lily will grow to a certain state and have sufficient nutrients to enter the flower bud differentiation period.

How to plant water lily?

1. Prepare the flower pot

When growing bowl lotus, you need to prepare the cultivation containers in advance. You can use a small ceramic pot, or a flower pot without drainage holes at the bottom. The diameter of the flower pot should be about 25 to 30 cm. If the volume is too small, the amount of soil can be limited, which will also affect the normal growth and development of the plant.

2. Seed treatment

When planting water lilies, the seeds must be processed because the outer shell of the water lilies seeds is hard, which affects normal germination. Before sowing, you can use scissors to make a small hole in the depression of the seeds, being careful not to damage the embryo inside. This will help the seeds to germinate.

3. Warm water germination

You can first soak the lotus seeds in warm water to germinate. The method is to put the opened seeds directly into a bowl, add warm water at about 25℃ to 30℃, the depth of which is just enough to cover the seeds. Change the warm water several times a day and it will germinate in about a week. When it grows two leaves, you can plant it in a flowerpot and take care of it.

4. Potting and maintenance

Before potting, prepare fertile culture soil in advance. You can dig pond silt, or you can use humus soil and add garden soil or river sand. Prepare wet mud and put it into a non-porous flowerpot. Plant the water lily seedlings in the pot and add clean water. Don't add too deep water. It should be enough for the leaves to float, but not to submerge them.

After planting the water lily, avoid direct sunlight, as the light is too strong and can easily burn the leaves. The potted plants can be placed in a cool and ventilated place for maintenance, and gradually exposed to light after the seedlings have fully grown. As the plants grow, the water level should be appropriately deepened during maintenance, but be careful not to completely submerge the leaves. In the later stage, you can add bone meal and other phosphorus fertilizers to the flowerpot to encourage the plant to bloom as soon as possible.
