How to grow Dianthus barbatus

How to grow Dianthus barbatus

1. Soil

It is best to plant it in fertile, loose, well-drained, calcareous loam or sandy loam. If you want to plant it in a pot at home, you need to plant it deeply, use a larger pot, and add soil to the roots in batches to allow it to grow steadily.

2. Temperature

It likes a warm climate environment, the optimum temperature is between 15-25℃, and the suitable temperature for seed germination is 18-20℃. Do not give it extreme temperatures, otherwise it will easily lead to problems such as wilting and leaf curling.

3. Watering

It is not advisable to water too much, as watering too frequently will cause the stems to become tender, so the soil should be kept relatively dry and you can spray water on the leaves frequently. It is best to water the pot upwards from the hole at the bottom of the pot, not pouring water downwards over the head, and avoid water accumulation.

4. Lighting

Dianthus beardii is afraid of strong sunlight. If you are not careful, it will easily cause the leaves to curl and become deformed. Don’t place it in a place where it can be directly exposed to the midday sun at home. You can grow it in semi-shade.

5. Notes

1. Fertilization: The stems of Dianthus whiskere are relatively tender. If too much nitrogen fertilizer is applied, it will easily not bloom. When applying fertilizer, apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, such as fertilizers made from chicken and duck manure.

2. Prevent falling over: Avoid being blown by strong winds and don’t expose to heavy rain outdoors, otherwise the plant will not grow well and may even fall over. You can insert a pillar in the pot and tie it with a thin wire to fix the posture.
