How to care for and water the Dracaena?

Dracaena, also known as dragon tree, is a tree belonging to the genus Dracaena in the Agavaceae family . It is known for its stubby trunk, light brown bark, blue-green leaves and deep red sap. As a plant that loves full sun, Dracaena is equally adaptable to shade and prefers hot and humid climatic conditions, making it an ideal choice for indoor decoration. Let’s learn together how to care for and water the Dracaena tree.

1. Watering

Dracaena has a certain degree of drought resistance, so watering needs to be moderate to avoid frequent watering which may cause root rot. The principle of watering is "better dry than wet". Wait until the soil in the pot is completely dry before watering thoroughly. Adjust the frequency of watering according to the season. Water every 2-3 days in spring, summer and autumn, and reduce watering in winter.

2. Fertilization

During the growing season (spring, summer and autumn), apply thin liquid fertilizer once every half a month to promote healthy growth of the plants. Newly planted dragon blood trees should be fertilized once a month in the early stages. Pay attention to the fertilizer concentration to prevent fertilizer damage.

3. Lighting

Dracaena loves light and should be placed in a well-lit area. It can also grow in a semi-shaded environment. It needs at least 2 hours of light a day, and avoid strong direct sunlight in summer to prevent leaf burns.

4. Soil

It grows well in loose, breathable, nutrient-rich, slightly acidic soil. You can make your own soil mix, such as a mixture of vermiculite, perlite, and peat moss.

5. Pruning

Regular pruning helps maintain the beautiful shape and healthy growth of the dragon blood tree. Remove the leaves that are too long at the bottom and trim the top to make it smooth, and cut off the diseased, yellow and overly dense branches and leaves.

6. Notes

In winter, the dragon blood tree enters a dormant period. At this time, watering and fertilizing should be stopped to ensure a safe winter. When applying fertilizer, avoid excessive application of nitrogen fertilizer to prevent the leaves from becoming lighter in color and affecting their ornamental value.

The above is an introduction to the maintenance methods and watering points of Dracaena. Flower lovers who have potted Dracaena at home can refer to it based on actual conditions.
