How and when to plant onions

How and when to plant onions

Onion is a nutritious vegetable and condiment with multiple functions. It has strong adaptability and is grown in all parts of China. Generally speaking, the planting time of onions varies depending on the variety and climatic conditions. The planting method is simple. The following editor will introduce the planting method and time of onions. Let’s take a look.

1. Planting time of onions

1. Spring planting

Spring is one of the important seasons for onion growth, and is especially suitable for onion varieties with strong cold resistance. In most areas, spring planting time for alliums is usually between March and April. At this time, the temperature gradually rises and the soil begins to thaw, which is conducive to the germination and growth of onions.

2. Summer planting

Relatively few onions are planted in summer because the high temperature and high humidity environment is not conducive to the growth and quality formation of onions. However, in some areas with cooler climates and moderate humidity, summer planting can also be carried out between June and July.

3. Autumn planting

Autumn is one of the main seasons for onion planting, especially suitable for the planting of green onions. Green onions prefer cool climatic conditions, so planting them in autumn can produce higher yields and quality. In most areas, fall planting time for alliums is usually between August and October.

2. How to plant onions

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Onions do not have high requirements for soil, but loose, fertile and well-drained soil is preferred. Before sowing, the land needs to be deeply plowed and sufficient base fertilizer applied. 2000-3000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer and 30-50 kg of compound fertilizer are applied per mu.

2. Seeding and transplanting

Sprinkle the onion seeds evenly into the soil and then cover with a thin layer of soil. After sowing, keep the soil moist to promote seed germination and growth. If you choose to transplant the onion seedlings, you need to make sure they are healthy and free of pests and diseases. When transplanting, maintain appropriate plant spacing and row spacing so that the onion plants can grow fully. Water the plants in time after transplanting to promote root growth of the seedlings.

3. Field management

The soil should be kept moist during the growth period of onions, but waterlogging should be avoided. Watering frequency should be increased in summer and reduced in winter. During the vigorous growth period of onions, top dressing is required. Apply 10-15 kg of urea or decomposed human feces and urine per mu, and remove weeds in time to avoid competing with onions for nutrients.

4. Pest and disease control

During the growth process of onions, attention should be paid to preventing and controlling pests such as leaf miners, onion thrips, and diseases such as powdery mildew. Pesticides such as malathion, dichlorvos, and malathion emulsifiable concentrate can be used for prevention and control. However, attention should be paid to the amount and concentration of pesticides used to avoid adverse effects on the growth of onions.

The above is an introduction to the planting methods and time of onions. Farmers should choose the best planting time according to the local climate and variety, and master the above planting methods to ensure the healthy growth, high yield and high quality of onions.
