How to grow gardenia

How to grow gardenia

1. Temperature

Growing gardenia requires a warm growing environment because it has relatively high temperature requirements. The ideal temperature for its growth is between 20-28℃. In the north, the temperature cannot be lower than 5℃ in winter, otherwise its branches and leaves will be frostbitten. It can tolerate low temperatures for short periods of time, but not for too long.

2. Lighting

Gardenias need plenty of light to grow. Except for the midsummer noon when it is necessary to avoid direct sunlight and provide appropriate shade, it can be placed in the sun at other times to receive full sunlight so that it can grow stronger. If there is insufficient light, it may grow too tall or have insufficient flowers. It has a certain degree of shade tolerance, but shade tolerance does not mean it likes shade. It is best to give it sufficient sunlight for growing.

3. Moisture

Keep the soil in the pot slightly moist; if it is too dry, it will easily get damaged. In addition, it can tolerate some waterlogging, but prolonged waterlogging can cause its roots to rot.

4. Soil

Gardenia prefers slightly acidic soil, and soil with a pH of around 6.0 is an ideal growing soil. You can prepare the soil at home by mixing half leaf mold and half peat soil.

5. Prevent pests

Gardenia is easily attacked by scale insects and aphids, which can cause sooty mold disease. Always observe at all times and deal with it in time once it is discovered to prevent it from spreading.

6. Repotting

Gardenia grows relatively quickly and blooms in large quantities, so it needs to be repotted and re-soiled every 2-3 years to ensure adequate nutrition.
