The difference between Syngonium and Pothos

The difference between Syngonium and Pothos

1. Differences in varieties

In plant classification, Syngonium and Pothos belong to the same Araceae order. Not only that, they also belong to the same family. Although the order and family are the same, the genera and species are different, namely Syngonium and Pothos, which shows that there are still obvious differences between the two.

Second, the difference in morphological characteristics

The young leaves of Syngonium are different from the old leaves. In other words, they have dimorphic leaves. The new leaves are shaped like arrows or halberds and are lighter in color, often light green. The old leaves are palm-shaped or shield-shaped, and some varieties are even butterfly-wing-shaped. Its leaves are relatively thick and dark green. The color of the leaf veins is lighter than the surrounding mesophyll, often yellow-white, which results in uneven color of the entire leaf. The leaf shapes of different types of Syngonium are quite varied.

The petiole of the green radish is relatively thick and has wide grooves on the ventral side. The leaves are broadly ovate, thin, with neat edges and no teeth, and the petiole is deeply cordate. The leaves that are growing well and healthily are emerald green in color. The color of the veins is similar to that of the surrounding leaves, with no obvious difference. The entire leaf is uniform in color, and the surface of the leaf is smooth and shiny.

3. Different growth environment requirements

A high temperature and humid environment is most conducive to the growth of Syngonium, and the most suitable temperature is approximately between 22 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius. Syngonium is not cold-resistant. Its growth is inhibited at lower temperatures (around 15 degrees Celsius), and it completely stops growing at around 10 degrees Celsius. The leaves will be frostbitten at temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius.

Pothos also likes an environment with high temperature and high humidity. Unlike Syngonium, it is a shade-loving plant and is more sensitive to direct sunlight. It is not as adaptable to light as Syngonium. Therefore, scattered light can be used during cultivation. The green radish requires a lot of water, so it can be grown entirely using hydroponic methods to maintain its good growth.
