How to propagate Hoya by cuttings?

How to propagate Hoya by cuttings?

Loved for its unique flower shape and attractive appearance, the Hoya orchid is a popular choice in home gardening. Hoya can be propagated by two methods: cuttings or layering, but cuttings are more popular because of their simple operation and high survival rate. Let’s learn how to propagate Hoya by cuttings.

1. Choice of cutting time

Cuttings of Hoya should be avoided in the low temperature period of early spring and winter. The best time is March to April when the climate is suitable. Although cuttings can be taken at other times, Hoya can still successfully root with proper care.

2. Soil preparation

Use humus-rich, loose soil. It is recommended to mix leaf mold, vermiculite and perlite in a ratio of 4:2:2. Soil preparation should be flexibly adjusted according to actual conditions. The key is to ensure that the soil is breathable, well-drained and fertile.

3. Selection and preparation of cuttings

Choose 1-2 year old stems or current year shoots as cuttings and cut them into 5-8 cm segments, retaining 2 nodes in each segment. Remove the bottom leaves, bevel the bottom, and keep 1-2 leaves on the top. Place the cut cuttings in a cool and ventilated place to dry in order to increase the survival rate of the cuttings.

4. Cutting operation

Prepare a flowerpot of suitable size and fill it with prepared culture soil. Use a small wooden stick or chopsticks to poke holes in the soil, about 2-3 cm deep. Insert the shade-dried cuttings into the hole, lightly compact the surrounding soil, and water thoroughly. Cover with film to maintain humidity, place in a cool and ventilated place, and keep the soil moist. Keep the temperature between 18-25 degrees Celsius to facilitate rooting of the cuttings.

The above are the methods and time for Hoya cuttings. By following these steps, you can increase the success rate of Hoya cuttings.
