Banyan tree cultivation methods and precautions

Banyan tree cultivation methods and precautions

The banyan tree has a graceful posture, is vigorous and simple, and is evergreen all the year round. It has good meaning and symbolizes longevity and good luck. Banyan trees are often made into bonsai and placed in homes for maintenance. Here are some tips and precautions for growing banyan trees.

1. Soil

Banyan trees are relatively acid-loving plants, so the potting soil should be rich in organic matter and have good water permeability and air permeability. You can use a mixture of leaf mold, peat soil, garden soil, coal slag, coarse sand, etc. as the culture soil.

2. Watering

Banyan tree is a moisture-loving plant. During normal maintenance, the soil in the pot should be kept slightly moist to avoid excessive dryness or water accumulation in the pot. Each time you water, make sure the soil is wet and water thoroughly. During the hot summer season, place the potted plants in a cool and ventilated place, and water the plants frequently to achieve the effect of cooling and increasing humidity.

3. Fertilization

In order to make the banyan tree grow vigorously, you can apply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer once a month, or frequently apply some fermented organic fertilizer liquid to it. In summer and winter, be careful not to apply fertilizer as much as possible. During the growing period, you can use some foliar fertilizer to supplement nutrients.

4. Lighting

Banyan trees like warm, humid, ventilated and well-lit environments. In addition to shading them in the summer, they need to be exposed to sufficient light in other seasons. If they need to be grown indoors in the winter, they also need to be placed in a place with good lighting conditions for maintenance.

5. Pruning

The branches and leaves of banyan bonsai grow fast, so they need to be pruned and shaped frequently, and the root system needs to be cultivated at the same time to achieve a perfect combination. The shaping of banyan trees is mainly done by pruning, supplemented by winding and tying. For small plants of one or two years old, drastic pruning is not advisable. Allow it to sprout first. If there are too many branches and they are too messy, you can cut off a small amount of messy branches in spring, and then make appropriate selections and pruning after the plants grow thick and strong.

6. Repotting

Potted banyan trees are different from banyan trees planted outdoors, so the use of soil is more important. If the soil is not changed for a long time, the soil in the pot will become compacted and the soil quality will be very poor. In this way, its roots will become knotted and water will not penetrate, which will affect the absorption of water and nutrients. It needs to be repotted every two years, preferably in spring and autumn.

7. Notes

Do not water potted banyan trees too much, otherwise the soil in the pot will be wet for a long time and the leaves will fall off easily. Watering should be controlled even more in winter. The leaves of the banyan tree are dark green, and it rarely grows new leaves and grows slowly. You can spray it with 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate once every half a month. It is best to keep the banyan tree outdoors when the winter is not cold. If it is kept indoors for a long time, the branches and leaves will become sparse due to the lack of photosynthesis.
