Dahlia Growth Characteristics

(1) Likes moisture and is afraid of waterlogging. Dahlias are afraid of drought and avoid waterlogging. This is because dahlias have fleshy tuberous roots, and excessive watering will cause the roots to rot. But its leaves are large, it grows lushly, and requires more water. If water is not replenished in time after the plant wilts due to lack of water, the leaves will dry up at the edges and dry up when exposed to sunlight. In severe cases, the leaves at the base will fall off. Therefore, when watering, you should follow the principle of "water thoroughly when the soil is dry".

(2) It likes fertility but is afraid of excess. When planting dahlias, it is advisable to choose fertile and loose soil. In addition to applying base fertilizer, top dressing is also required. Usually, from mid-to-late July until flowering, apply thin liquid fertilizer every 7-10 days, and the concentration of fertilizer should be gradually increased to make the stems longer and thicker, and the leaves dark green and stretched.

(3) Likes sunlight and dislikes shade. Dahlias prefer full sun. If placed in a shaded place for a long time, it will grow poorly, its root system will become weak, its leaves will be thin and its stems will be thin, its flowers will be small and pale in color, or it may even fail to bloom. Only by planting it in a sunny place can the plant grow strong and bloom bright flowers.

(4) They like coolness and are afraid of heat. Dahlias prefer a cool climate during their flowering period, with temperatures around 20°C for best growth. It can grow well from late spring to late autumn when planted in North China and other places. But it is afraid of direct sunlight in the hot summer, especially the direct sunlight after the rain. At this time, it should be slightly shaded so that it can grow better.
