Cultivation method of goldenrod

Cultivation method of goldenrod

Basic form

The goldenrod is a deciduous small tree that often grows in clusters like shrubs. It has a round shape and can reach a height of 6 meters. Its flowers are an excellent source of nectar, its fruits are a delicacy for birds, and the whole plant can be used for medicinal purposes. The twigs are hollow, with single leaves opposite each other; the leaves are ovate-elliptical to lanceolate; the apex is gradually pointed, and the leaves are sparsely covered with soft hairs on both sides. Flowers are borne in pairs in the axillary, with a two-lipped corolla. When the flowers bloom, they are white at first and then turn yellow, hence the name "gold and silver wood". The berries are spherical and bright red. The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruit ripening period is from August to October. Goldenrod is one of the most common tree species in landscaping. It is often planted in clusters on lawns, hillsides, forest edges, roadsides or around buildings for viewing its fruit. Old stumps can be made into pots. The honeysuckle is different from the honeysuckle, the former is a woody plant, while the latter is a herbaceous plant.

Flower characteristics

The goldenrod has five stamens (anthers + filaments).
Flowers are bisexual, regular or irregular, corolla fused, tubular or whorled, sometimes 2-lipped, calyx tube adnate to ovary, corolla and calyx tube 5 or 4-lobed; often with bracts; ovary inferior, stamens 5; inflorescence varies greatly, mostly cymes, whorls or 2 flowers side by side.

Species Fruit

The fruits of the goldenrod are mostly used for sowing and propagation and cannot be eaten.
According to Liu Zhonghua, associate professor at the School of Life Sciences of Beijing Forestry University, there are more than 40 common wild fruits on the mountains in Beijing in autumn, of which more than 20 species, such as sour jujube, baby's fist, hawthorn, persimmon, sand apple, wild grape, chestnut, and hairy hazel, are edible; the other more than 20 species, such as wolfberry, goldenrod, and white magnolia, have sour fruits and are not suitable for consumption. Some may also cause adverse reactions such as dizziness, nausea, and diarrhea. "Many wild fruits, such as the goldenrod, have bright red fruits that look particularly beautiful, but they are not edible." Liu Zhonghua reminded the general public not to be fooled by the beautiful appearance of wild fruits to avoid eating poisonous wild fruits.

Growth environment

The goldenrod is strong, light-loving, semi-shade-tolerant, drought-tolerant and cold-resistant. It likes moist, fertile and deep soil. The management is extensive and there are few diseases and pests.

Ornamental value

Landscape use: The flowers and fruits of the goldenrod are both beautiful and have high ornamental value. In spring, you can enjoy the flowers and smell their fragrance; in autumn, you can see the abundant red fruits. In late spring and early summer, the flowers bloom in layers, with gold and silver contrasting with each other. From a distance, the whole plant looks like a beautiful big flower ball. The flowers are elegant and fragrant, attracting bees and butterflies, so the goldenrod is also an excellent nectar source tree species. In the golden autumn season, pairs of red fruits hang on the branches, which are very attractive and also provide food for birds. In gardens, clusters of goldenrod are often planted on lawns, hillsides, forest edges, roadsides or dotted around buildings, suitable for viewing both flowers and fruits. The goldenrod has vigorous tree vigor, lush branches and leaves, fragrant flowers in early summer, and red fruits on the branches in autumn. It is an excellent ornamental shrub.
