How to grow roses in winter

Winter pruning of roses

In winter, roses need to be pruned and then they can be brought indoors for maintenance.

Before bringing roses indoors, for one-year-old seedlings, two-thirds of the branches over 30 cm can be cut off, while those less than 30 cm can be cut off by half. For large seedlings over two years old, keep 3 or 4 strong main branches and the rest can be properly pruned. After pruning, you can apply some antiseptic on the wound caused by pruning to prevent wound infection.

Rose flower indoor maintenance in winter

In winter, trimmed roses can be brought indoors for maintenance. Place them outdoors for a while and then bring them indoors before the soil in the pot freezes. When bringing it indoors, first place it in a low temperature place indoors to thaw, and then move it to a warm place with sufficient light. It needs to be kept in sufficient light every day.

In winter, you should pay attention to controlling water and fertilizer for roses. In fact, the growth of roses is very slow in winter and does not require a lot of watering and fertilization. When watering, you need to pay attention to the water temperature and time to prevent the soil from freezing and causing frost damage. There is no need for top dressing in winter, but if the soil becomes compacted, it is necessary to repot the plant. When repotting, you can add some base fertilizer.

Roses overwintering outdoors

Sometimes, roses may overwinter outdoors in winter. At this time, you need to cut the branches of the roses short and remove all the leaves. Then bury the flowerpots in the soil, spread straw on the soil surface or cover the plants with plastic film to overwinter. You can dig them out after the temperature rises in spring.

It is important to prevent the cold wind in winter. You can place it in a leeward place or take some wind-blocking measures.

Roses overwinter in southern regions

It should be noted that in the southern region, winter is not as cold as in the north, and some roses can still bloom. At this time, you should let nature take its course. However, if the conditions for flowering are not met, it is still necessary to prune the roses and reduce the application of water and fertilizer, but there is no need to go through the trouble of frost protection.
