Cultivation methods and precautions of Tigerthorn

Cultivation methods and precautions of Tigerthorn

1. Soil

The first thing to pay attention to when growing Euphorbia milii at home is the soil. The soil is equivalent to our home environment. If you want the plant to grow well, the soil is of primary importance. It is best to use sandy soil for the potting soil. You can choose leaf mold and sandy soil mixed with a small amount of fertilizer.

2. Watering

The leaves of Euphorbia milii are fleshy and very drought-resistant, so do not water it too much. Because the soil is sandy and has good water absorption, it can retain moisture for a long time and can grow well without frequent watering. If you water too much and the soil in the pot is too wet, it will cause root rot and endanger the survival of the plant. When watering, pay attention to keeping the soil in the pot dry.

Watering also requires consideration of weather conditions. In summer, the weather is hot and water evaporates quickly, so you can water more appropriately. After watering, try to place the plants in a ventilated place to avoid excessive watering that affects plant growth.

3. Fertilization

As for fertilizer, it is better to use less rather than more. In summer and autumn, it is sufficient to apply diluted fertilizer once every 3 to 4 weeks. In winter and spring, try to reduce fertilization. Applying too much fertilizer during the growth period of Euphorbia milii will cause the branches and leaves to grow too vigorously, resulting in only leaves growing without flowers, and the ornamental value will be destroyed. Pay special attention to applying a small amount of fertilizer during the flower bud differentiation period, so as to ensure lush leaves and flowers.

4. Lighting

Everyone knows that plants can only grow luxuriantly with sufficient light, and Euphorbia milii is no exception. It is best to ensure sufficient sunlight all year round, and pay special attention during the flowering period. For indoor potted plants, you need to move the Euphorbia milii to a well-lit place frequently. Only with sufficient sunlight will the flowers be bright and the leaves be lush. If placed in a dark environment for a long time, not only will it grow poorly, but it will also affect flowering.

5. Pruning

Everyone who grows flowers hopes for more flowers. The flowers of Euphorbia milii bloom at the top of new branches. If you want it to bloom more, you need to prune it properly. The season and technique of pruning require great attention. Pruning is not allowed during the flowering season, the main branches cannot be too long, and the side branches cannot be too short. Usually after the flowering period, the overly long and unevenly growing branches are cut short. This can ensure the number and growth of flowers when they bloom next time. Pruning usually causes two new branches to grow under the cut ends of the branches. When the new branches grow to 5 to 6 cm, they can bloom. After a few years, the entire plant will be covered with bright red flowers.

6. Notes

After 1 to 2 years of growth, Euphorbia milii needs to be repotted in time, usually in spring every year, that is, in March to April. When repotting, keep part of the old soil at the roots, replace it with new soil, and replant it. Be sure to cut off dead roots, injured roots and overly long taproots, and also appropriately cut off dense branches and leaves.

Eriobotrya is an upright vine plant. Its branches are prone to fall over as it grows taller. They can be supported by tying them together with bamboo strips or other materials, or by building a frame with bamboo strips to form various shapes of landscapes, such as spheres or animals, which will be more interesting and spectacular.

Because Euphorbia milii likes a warm environment, the temperature in winter cannot be lower than 12℃, so try to move it to a sheltered place indoors for maintenance.
