How to propagate Japanese cypress by cuttings

How to propagate Japanese cypress by cuttings

1. Cutting time

It is best to propagate Japanese cypress by cuttings when the climate is stable, avoiding cold and hot weather. If done in a greenhouse, cuttings can be used for propagation all year round.

2. Select branches

When taking cuttings, you should use one-year-old young branches that are in good growth condition. The survival rate of such branches is relatively high, and the length should be controlled at around 10-15cm. Cut off all the branches in the middle and below, and keep appropriate branches in the upper part.

3. Prepare the matrix

After processing the branches, start preparing the cutting medium. It needs to be loose and well-drained. You can use leaf mold combined with sandy soil.

4. Take cuttings

Carefully insert the branches into the soil, not too deep, as this will affect rooting. After cuttings, water them sufficiently and place them in a shaded place for maintenance. Roots will grow in about 2-3 months.
