How to prune wisteria and when to prune

How to prune wisteria and when to prune

1. Time and method of wisteria pruning

1. Summer pruning: Around July in summer, the wisteria should be lightly pruned to remove the withered flowers and old branches on the plant. Because it can bloom twice, pruning after the first flowering can help the plant save nutrients, which is beneficial for its second flowering.

2. Winter pruning: Wisteria will enter a dormant period in winter, and all the flowers and leaves will fall off, so it is very convenient to prune the branches. At this time, heavy pruning is required, leaving only 2-3 buds on each branch, and the rest of the buds need to be cut off. In addition, all the small branches and side branches on the plant that are not growing vigorously should be cut off. This can reduce nutrient consumption and allow the plant to concentrate nutrients on the remaining branches to ensure that enough flowers can bloom.

2. Precautions for pruning wisteria

1. When pruning in summer, if there are flower buds on the plant, be careful not to damage them. They are fragile and will fall off if touched, so be careful when handling them.

2. After winter pruning, place the plant in a place with a temperature between 5-10℃. It is in a dormant period at this time. Placing it in such an environment will help it to dormant, which is very beneficial for its growth and flowering next year.
