Why do the leaves of Schefflera turn yellow and fall off?

Schefflera chinensis , also known as the fortune tree, is favored for its evergreen leaves and elegant appearance. It is an ideal indoor foliage plant that can add a touch of vitality to the home environment. However, some flower lovers may encounter the problem of yellowing or even falling leaves when caring for Schefflera oleifera. Let’s learn why the leaves of Schefflera turn yellow and fall off?

1. The temperature is too low

Schefflera prefers a warm environment, and the suitable growth temperature is 15-27℃. In a low temperature environment, especially below 10℃, its growth will be inhibited, and the leaves may turn yellow and fall off when the temperature is below 5℃. If yellow leaves appear in winter, you should consider keeping warm and controlling watering.

2. Inappropriate lighting

Schefflera is suitable for growing in a semi-shaded and diffuse light environment. Excessive direct sunlight may cause the leaves to wilt and turn yellow, while long-term lack of light can also affect photosynthesis and cause leaf fall. The Schefflera should be placed near a window with bright but not direct light.

3. Improper watering

Random watering, especially with leftover tea water, may result in the soil being moist on the surface but dry inside, or cause waterlogging and root rot. The correct way to water is to wait until the surface of the potting soil is slightly white before watering thoroughly, and avoid watering randomly.

4. Fertilization issues

Excessive fertilization or application of incompletely decomposed fertilizers may cause root burn, leading to yellowing and leaf drop. Fully decomposed organic fertilizer should be used, and the amount of fertilizer applied should be controlled to avoid direct contact of fertilizer with leaves or rhizomes .

5. Poor ventilation

Schefflera requires a good ventilation environment to promote water evaporation and healthy growth of the plant. Poor indoor ventilation may cause yellowing of leaves. The Schefflera should be placed in a well-ventilated place and the dense branches and leaves should be trimmed in time.

6. Air drying

Schefflera prefers a humid environment, and dry air may cause yellowing and leaf fall. In summer, the humidity can be increased by spraying water, and in winter, a humidifier can be used to adjust it.

In general, yellowing and falling leaves of Schefflera are usually caused by the above reasons. During maintenance, problems should be identified and appropriate measures should be taken according to the specific situation to promote the healthy growth of Schefflera.
