Reasons and solutions for the drying up of yew bonsai

Reasons and solutions for the drying up of yew bonsai

Cause Analysis:

1. Severe lack of light

Although yew is a shade-tolerant tree species, it still needs proper light for normal photosynthesis. If there is insufficient light and less photosynthetic products, there will be a lack of sufficient nutrients. The photosynthetic products cannot circulate back to supply the root system, causing the root system to lack nutrients and become hungry, causing the leaves to turn yellow and fall off. This is a way for plants to self-regulate.

Solution: Place it on the balcony or outdoors in the morning and evening, and do this every few days.

2. Serious water imbalance

Yew is drought-tolerant but not water-tolerant. If there is severe waterlogging and the soil in the pot is too wet, there will be a lack of oxygen in the soil, and the roots will perform anaerobic respiration, which will then turn into alcohol poisoning, suffocating and rotting the roots, causing the death of the entire plant.

Solution: Water thoroughly at one time, and water when the soil is dry. The surface soil of the pot may be dry, but the soil in the middle may not be lacking water. When watering, you can use agents to prevent and control root rot: add 1 gram of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane to each pot and water it, or 2 grams of carbendazim or active root promoter to water it. You can also add ferrous sulfate to water and water it. The concentration should be small rather than large, and it should be done according to the principle of small amounts and multiple times.

3. Lack of nutrients in the potting soil and soil compaction

Use 10-20 grams of organic fertilizer or decomposed cake fertilizer for each pot, apply it after loosening the potting soil and then watering, or mix it with water and apply it, and you can also combine it with spraying foliar fertilizer.

Foliar fertilizer: Mix 0.3% urea + 0.3% ferrous sulfate, 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate + 0.1% polychlorinated fungus to make a solution and spray it on the leaves once every seven to ten days. The rest of the time is mainly spraying water. Tap water needs to be left for 2-3 days before surface water can be used.

Since fertilizers sprayed on leaves are mainly absorbed by stomata, and the stomata are mainly concentrated on the back of the leaves, it is required to spray water and pesticides from the leaf surface to the back of the leaf in order to achieve a good absorption effect. The best time for spraying is around 5 pm.

4. The pot is small and the seedlings are large, and the soil in the pot cannot provide enough nutrients

The seedlings turn yellow, the roots are densely distributed around the edge of the pot, and they are sensitive to external temperature, which causes the death of the root tips, and then manifests itself as yellowing, drying up, and falling leaves on the branches of the plants.

Solution:

Choose a cool time in the morning or evening to repot. The bottom hole of a large pot should be raised, and it is best to put a layer of egg-sized stones on the bottom to facilitate water permeability and prevent water accumulation. Choose humus soil for the potting soil and add an appropriate amount of ferrous sulfate. Be sure to mix it evenly. First, it has a disinfecting effect on the potting soil. Second, it can supply iron for a long time to prevent the leaves from turning yellow due to iron deficiency.

Observe frequently and take measures early. Don't wait until the leaves start to turn yellow and the branches dry up before taking rescue measures. By then, the roots have already rotted.
