What to do if Clivia is pinched by an arrow

What is a clip arrow?

The word "clipped arrow" is unique to Clivia, and refers to the fact that the arrow stalk cannot be pulled out when Clivia blooms, and is stuck between the leaves, unable to grow upwards and has nowhere to go downwards. If not handled in time, the flower arrow will wither and die in the middle of the leaves! Is your Clivia really trapped by an arrow?

The complicated language still doesn’t make you understand what a clamped arrow is, so let’s take a look at the picture! Look, the tiny flower stem is completely invisible. ↓↓↓

The flower stem was pulled out with difficulty from the middle of the leaves. The flower grew a little twisted and couldn't grow big! ↓↓↓

Why the arrow?

Poor quality

Quality refers to the growth condition of the Clivia. You can tell whether the Clivia you bought home will have arrow pinching. The main symptoms of Clivia that is prone to pinched arrows are: the leaves are pointed, the veins are irregular, and there are more than 5 hanging veins; the leaves are thin, and the thickness difference between the edge and the middle of the leaves is large; the leaves are messy, and when the light is uneven, the upper leaves are in the east and the lower leaves are in the west.

Temperature discomfort

The best temperature for Clivia to grow arrows is 20℃. When the temperature is below 15℃, it is difficult for the flower arrows to grow. In addition, the size of the temperature difference also has a certain impact on the growth of flower arrows. If the temperature is the same during the day and at night, the Clivia will not accumulate enough nutrients and the flower arrows will not have enough strength to grow.

Nutritional deficiencies

When blooming, Clivia needs certain nutrients - phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. This is a problem that many flower lovers tend to ignore. You can't just stand by and watch plants bloom, you have to give them appropriate help.

Pot soil lack of oxygen

There are many reasons for lack of oxygen in the potting soil, such as soil compaction, excessive watering... This phenomenon directly leads to poor root growth of Clivia, and the leaves and flower stems lack the source of nutrient supply, so arrow pinching is inevitable.

Emergency treatment methods

Method 1: The quickest and most effective way to deal with it is to move the Clivia to a completely dark place, ensure the temperature is between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, and then use a plastic bag or a soft rope to separate the leaves as shown in the picture. After 3 to 5 days of this treatment, the flower arrows can be pulled out.

Method 2: Water the Clivia with warm water at 25°C and add a small amount of beer. Although I don’t know what the principle is, after some flower lovers have tried it, the effect is good.

Precautions for maintenance after clipping arrows

Since the Clivia has arrow clipping, it means that there is a problem with your maintenance, you must make timely adjustments:

It is necessary to apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, even after the flower arrows of Clivia have sprouted, especially during the flowering period in autumn and winter, when nutrients should be supplemented.

Change the soil, but don't change it when the flowers are blooming, wait until the flowers fade. Depending on the growth of the plant, half of the soil will be replaced with new soil. After changing the soil, please note that you cannot water it within 5 days.
