Causes and treatments for yellowing perilla leaves

Causes and treatments for yellowing perilla leaves

1. Water shortage

Reason: Perilla grows well in a humid environment and has strong waterlogging resistance. If there is insufficient water for a long time, the plant will dry up and the leaves will turn yellow.

Treatment: If the yellow leaves are caused by lack of water, you need to move the flower pot to a cool place immediately, spray some water on the leaves, and water them in small amounts. Wait until the stems and leaves gradually regain their upright shape, then gradually increase the amount of watering. When growing perilla, you must always ensure the moisture of the potting soil and replenish water in time.

2. Not enough light

Reason: Perilla likes sunlight. If it is placed in a dark, sunless room for a long time, its growth will be hindered and yellow leaves will appear.

Solution: If the yellow leaves are caused by insufficient light, first trim off the yellow leaves, and then place it in a sunny environment for maintenance. It is best to keep it in sunlight for 6-8 hours a day. It needs shade during the hot summer months, otherwise the strong sunlight will burn it, and in severe cases the leaves will turn yellow.

3. Pot soil compaction

Reason: If the soil where perilla grows becomes compacted, the roots will have difficulty breathing and nutrients cannot be fully absorbed, causing the flowers to have yellow leaves, fall off, wither, or even rot.

Solution: If cracks appear in the flowerpot, gaps appear between the soil and the edge of the flowerpot, and water cannot be poured thoroughly, it means that the soil is becoming compacted. If the situation is not serious, you can loosen the soil first, then place the plant in a place without strong light and observe its recovery. If the situation is serious, the soil needs to be replaced in time and then replanted.

4. Excessive Fertilization

Reason: Perilla likes fertilizer, but applying too much fertilizer will cause fertilizer damage and yellow leaves will easily appear.

Solution: If yellow leaves are caused by excessive fertilization, you need to immediately increase the amount of watering to allow the fertilizer to flow out from the drainage holes. Or you can immediately turn the pot over, rinse the roots with water, dilute the excess fertilizer, and then replant the plant in the pot.
