In fact, its taste is not as strange as imagined, and it is even very delicious. The day lilies produced in some parts of our country are quite famous. Let’s learn together when is the best time to plant day lilies?

When is the best time to plant daylily?

Spring and autumn. The best planting period in spring is from March to April every year. During this period, the temperature is suitable and the rainfall is sufficient, which is conducive to the growth and development of daylily seedlings. Autumn is also suitable for planting daylilies, usually from late September to early October. It may be slightly earlier in the northern regions, around late March to early April, while it can be advanced or delayed appropriately in the southern regions.

Cultivation technology of daylily

1. Land selection and preparation

Daylily has strong adaptability and can be planted in both light soil and sandy soil, but it is best grown in wetlands under shade or irrigated land on sandy slopes. Deeply plow the soil to a depth of about 20-30 cm, level the land, and build ridges and water channels. The ridges should be 6 meters long and 2 meters wide.

2. Fertilization

Apply sufficient base fertilizer, generally 4000 kg of high-quality farmyard manure and 50 kg of superphosphate per mu.

3. Seedling selection and planting

Choose well-growing old roots of daylily or seedlings that are cut into pieces and propagated by dividing the sprouts. The best time for planting is spring and autumn, especially around Qingming Festival in spring, after the soil thaws. Use wide and narrow row planting, with wide row spacing of 1.3 meters and narrow row spacing of 0.6 meters, ensuring that the seedlings are 1 cm above the ground.

4. Planting method

Single-row hole planting method: hole distance is 0.5 meters, three plants are planted in each hole, and 4,200 seedlings are planted per mu.

Single-row two-plant method: plant spacing is 0.4 meters, 2 plants are planted in each hole, and 3,500 seedlings are planted per mu.

5. Field management

Intertillage and weeding: The first soil loosening and weeding is carried out after the early spring thaw, followed by multiple intertillage and weeding combined with watering and fertilizing.

Fertilization strategy: Apply 15 kg of urea after emergence; apply 30 kg of urea when flower stalks emerge; apply 10 kg of urea after all flower stalks emerge; spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate in the middle and late stages of picking; apply 3,500 kg of high-quality farmyard manure and 50 kg of superphosphate as winter fertilizer.

Watering: Daylily likes water, so the soil needs to be kept moist. Water it once every week from bolting to harvesting.

Reasonable intercropping: Newly planted daylily can be intercropped with low-stalk crops such as melons, beans, and potatoes in the first two years.

Cut off old leaves and dig deep: During the Cold Dew season, cut off the withered and yellow leaves, dig deep into the soil, and prevent pests.

6. Pest and disease control

Rust disease: Apply fertilizers appropriately, drain water in time, and spray carbendazim or thiophanate-methyl in the early stage of the disease.

Red spider mites: Use Mite-Sweeping or Ceramide spray.

Aphids: Spray with imidacloprid, or make your own urine wash mixture.

Thrips: Agricultural control, physical trapping, chemical control using imidacloprid or acetamiprid.

The above is an introduction to the best planting time for daylily, which is usually dominated by spring and autumn. However, the specific planting time in the southern and northern regions should be determined based on actual conditions.
