What is the best way to grow roses in winter?

The beauty of roses is appreciated by countless people, and there are many varieties of roses. The flower shape of roses is relatively large, just like peonies. Although roses are easy to grow, you also need to pay attention to the following issues in winter.

1. Anti-freeze and windproof

Roses in cold northern regions need to take measures to prevent frost damage and cold wind damage. The plants can be protected by covering them with loose planting materials such as straw, pine needles , etc., or by covering them with plastic film, but leaving holes for ventilation. In particularly cold areas, if the plant needs to overwinter outdoors, you can cut the branches short, remove the leaves, turn the plant upside down and bury it in the soil outdoors together with the pot, cover it with a layer of soil more than 20 cm, and then cover it with straw, pine needles, etc. to prevent freezing during the winter.

2. Change soil, prune roots and apply fertilizer

Winter is the dormant period for roses and no topdressing is needed. However, if the potting material becomes powdery and hardened, it is necessary to turn the pot, remove the old soil, trim the old roots, replace the soil and replant. You can apply an appropriate amount of decomposed organic fertilizer as base fertilizer in the pot. Note that the fertilizer should be buried at about half the depth of the pot, and avoid burying it at the bottom of the pot to prevent fertilizer loss.

3. Watering

Roses require very little water during the hibernation period. The soil in the pot should be kept from drying out and the plants should not be dehydrated. Determine the watering time and amount according to weather conditions, and avoid watering when the temperature is too low at night to prevent the potting soil from freezing.

4. Pruning

In late autumn and early winter, when the temperature drops to 5℃, the roses should be pruned, and dead branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, crossed branches, overlapping branches, etc. should be cut off, and appropriate pruning should be carried out according to the growth of the plants. Plants that are growing poorly should be pruned vigorously, those that are growing normally should be pruned moderately, and those that are growing vigorously should be pruned lightly.

5. Pulling the branch

For climbing roses, winter is a good time to pull and twist branches. Through proper traction and fixation, the plant structure can be made more reasonable, which is conducive to growth and flowering in the coming year.

6. Sterilization and insecticide

Winter is also a good time to sterilize and kill insects on roses. The occurrence of diseases and pests can be reduced by spraying lime sulfur and other methods.

7. Indoor maintenance

For roses that cannot overwinter outdoors, they can be moved indoors for maintenance. Proper pruning should be done before bringing it indoors, and it should be gradually adapted to temperature changes in a low-temperature place indoors, and then moved to a place with sufficient light.

The above are the management precautions for growing roses in winter. Rose plants are very fragile in winter, so everyone should pay attention to daily maintenance.
