Lily overwintering planting method and time

Lily overwintering planting method and time

Lily is a traditional famous flower in China, known as the " Fairy in Clouds " and has a very high ornamental value. At the same time, lily is one of the first medicinal and edible plants approved by my country's Ministry of Health, so the prospects for its cultivation are very broad. So how do you grow lilies over the winter? Let’s learn more about it below.

Lily winter planting time

Lilies prefer warm and humid environments, so they are generally suitable for spring or autumn planting. Among them, autumn planting is carried out in mid-to-late October to early November, that is, before the soil is frozen. The bulbs will not germinate in the year after planting. The bulbs will overwinter in the soil and germinate early in the following spring, and the seedlings, flowering and budding will all be early, and the plants will grow vigorously. It is recommended that in areas with irrigation conditions or moderate annual rainfall and snowfall, autumn planting can be chosen more often when the soil moisture conditions are suitable.

How to plant lilies over the winter

1. Site selection and land preparation

The growing environment of lily requires fine and loose soil. Therefore, when preparing the land, we must pay special attention to leveling the land, constantly breaking up large pieces of soil, and then spreading enough farmyard manure, turning the land over, mixing the fertilizer evenly, and finally making ridges and furrows for subsequent sowing and drainage.

2. Seed treatment

Select lily seeds that are growing well and are full, clean them, place them in a container filled with rooting agent, soak them for about 20 minutes, then take them out and place them in a ventilated place to dry. Cover the seeds with gauze, place them in the prepared moist sandy soil, spray a small amount of water every day, keep the temperature at around 24 degrees, and they will take root and sprout in about 15-20 days.

3. Planting method

For cultivation on flat ridges with equal row spacing, trenches are dug manually or mechanically with a row spacing of 25-30 cm and a trench depth of 10-12 cm. The bulbs are placed manually in the trenches with a spacing of 15 cm between plants, and the thickness of the thin soil is 6-7 cm. The seed rate per mu is 300-400 kg, and the number of seedlings per mu is 16,000-17,000.

4. Post-sowing management

Water thoroughly after sowing immediately to keep the soil moist. Apply diluted cake fertilizer or diluted manure water when the seedlings are about 5 cm out of the soil, and apply diluted manure water again after 15-20 days. In addition, special attention should be paid to the prevention and control of diseases and pests, such as lily blight, viral disease, leaf blight, black stem disease, etc. Generally, broad-spectrum fungicides such as carbendazim, thiophanate-methyl, and mancozeb can be sprayed 2-3 times.

In general, lily planting technology is not difficult, and many areas have started planting lilies. However, if you want to safely overwinter, you must pay attention to the correct planting time and method, and strengthen post-sowing management to ensure high yields of lily planting.
