What kind of fertilizer is good for water spinach?

Water spinach is a common vegetable, which is suitable for large-scale cultivation mainly in the southern region. It grows fast, has high yield and good quality, and is deeply loved by local people. So what kind of fertilizer is good for water spinach? Let’s learn more about it below.

What kind of fertilizer is good for water spinach?

1. Application of base fertilizer

Apply base fertilizer to water spinach before sowing or 15-20 days after transplanting. You can use decomposed organic fertilizer or compound fertilizer , apply 10-15 kg per square meter, then lightly till the soil and mix the fertilizer with the soil thoroughly.

2. Topdressing

During the growth of water spinach, top dressing is needed in time to provide sufficient nutrients. The time for topdressing is generally divided into two stages: mid-term and late-term. For mid-term topdressing, when the water spinach grows to about 15-20 cm, you can use fertilizers such as urea and potassium sulfate, applying 0.5-1 kg per square meter and evenly spreading it around the water spinach plants.

In the later stage of topdressing, when the water spinach grows to about 30-40 cm, you can use compound fertilizer, diammonium phosphate and other fertilizers, apply 1-2 kg per square meter, and spread it evenly around the water spinach plants.

How to manage water spinach to achieve high yield?

1. Watering

During the early growth stages, water every 2-3 days to keep the soil moist. In the middle and late stages of growth, as the height of the water spinach plants increases, the amount of watering needs to be increased appropriately, with watering required every 1-2 days. Water spinach likes to be watered twice a day, morning and evening. Morning and evening are the best times to water it, which can reduce water evaporation and keep the soil moist.

2. Weeding

During the growth period of water spinach, if you see weeds, you must remove them in time. Even if there are only a small number of weeds, you should pull them out immediately. This is because the weeds will absorb nutrients from the soil, so the water spinach will not have enough nutrients. At the same time, it will also absorb the fertilizer you applied, making the weeds grow faster. In this case, the water spinach will not grow healthily and will not have a high yield.

3. Disease prevention and control

During the growth period of water spinach, powdery mildew, gray mold, and damping-off may occur. Powdery mildew is one of the common diseases of water spinach, which can be controlled by spraying 50% DDT wettable powder . Gray mold can be controlled by spraying with Bordeaux mixture, propiconazole and other fungicides . Remove diseased plants promptly for damping-off disease, and adopt measures such as crop rotation and intercropping to avoid continuous cropping.

4. Pest control

Aphids are a common pest of water spinach. You can use yellow boards to lure and kill aphids, or spray pesticides such as phoxim for prevention and control. Locusts are the main pests of water spinach and can be controlled by manual capture, spraying pesticides , etc.
