Pepper sowing time and method

Pepper sowing time and method

Pepper is an annual or perennial plant, and the climatic conditions in different regions determine its different planting cycles. Some areas can only grow one crop of peppers per year, while other areas are suitable for growing two crops. Learn below the time and method of sowing peppers.

1. Sowing time

Using greenhouse technology, peppers can be grown all year round in many areas. But for ordinary farmers, greenhouse cultivation may be costly. Here are the best times to plant peppers:

The climate in South China is warm, which is suitable for growing peppers almost all year round. The average annual temperature in these areas is about 23°C, and watering needs to be increased when the temperature is higher in the summer.

Yunnan's climate is like spring all year round, which is also suitable for planting all year round. However, spring and fall are the best times to grow peppers.

Northeast China, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Tibet, etc. These areas are usually only suitable for growing peppers for one season. The best sowing time is spring, around February to March. The harvest period is generally from July to September. If the temperature is low that year, the sowing time can be appropriately delayed.

In North China (Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, and Inner Mongolia), two seasons of peppers can be grown, with sowing occurring in January and April-May respectively. Chili peppers sown in January can be harvested in June, while those sown in April-May can be harvested in August-October.

Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Chongqing and other places are the main producing areas of peppers. They are usually sown in November and December of the previous year, and can be sown again in March and April in spring. Peppers sown the previous year can be harvested in May, while those sown in spring can be harvested from July to October.

2. Sowing Method

1. Seed treatment

About 0.1 kilograms of pepper seeds are needed per acre of land. First soak the seeds in clean water for 4 hours, then soak the seeds in root rot or agricultural streptomycin in proportion, and prepare for sowing after washing.

2. Preparation of nutrient soil

Choose fertile garden soil and farm manure and mix them to prepare nutrient soil. Stir well and set aside.

3. Preparation before sowing

Before sowing, the seedbed needs to be irrigated. After the water penetrates, spread a layer of fine soil on the bed, then sow the seeds, and cover with nutrient soil about half a centimeter to 1 centimeter thick.

4. Moisturizing and ventilation

Pay attention to temperature and moisture after sowing. Cover with film to keep warm and increase humidity, and ventilate appropriately when the temperature is high.

5. Transplanting of seedlings

Select high-quality seedlings for transplanting, wet the soil in the bed the day before transplanting, bring more soil when taking the seedlings to reduce root damage, and the planting depth should be such that the cotyledons are level with the soil. After transplanting, water the seedlings immediately to ensure that the roots are established.

6. Post-management

The amount of fertilizer required for pepper seedlings is not large, and the main amount of fertilizer is concentrated in the fruiting period. When applying fertilizer, pay attention to the balanced ratio and maintain soil moisture.

The above are the basic methods of pepper cultivation. You can choose suitable pepper varieties according to the environmental conditions of the region and do a good job of field management and other work.
