Time and method of raising beans seedlings

Now is the critical period for open-field cultivation of beans in spring, which is also one of the main planting methods. This cultivation mode is mainly adopted in rural areas in the north and south of China because the cost-effectiveness of this mode is relatively high in terms of harvesting time and yield. However, when sowing and raising beans, you also need to pay attention to whether the ambient temperature is appropriate. Let’s learn about the time and method of growing bean seedlings.

1. Seedling raising time of beans

The sowing time for beans should be chosen when the temperature rises above 14℃ in spring to ensure that the seeds can germinate smoothly after the frost ends. In North China, the appropriate time for open-field sowing is usually around mid-April when frost is completely over. This way, the seedlings will not be threatened by frost in the early stages of growth, thus ensuring that the young pods can be harvested from mid-June until mid-to-late August.

For the Yangtze River Basin, the sowing time of beans can be a little earlier, around late March to mid-April. As long as the soil temperature is stable at above 10℃, sowing can begin.

The seedling raising time of beans is mostly from February to late March in spring, while direct seeding can be carried out in late April. In addition, beans can also be planted in autumn from July to September. In areas south of the Yangtze River, beans can be cultivated in spring, summer and autumn, and the cycle is relatively long. Spring cultivation generally starts with seedling raising from late February to late March, and transplanting from late March to late April.

The sowing method of beans is similar to that of green beans. It is recommended to use the high ridge and low hole method, and cover the ground after sowing to maintain soil moisture and temperature. Considering the growth characteristics of the bean root system, it is recommended to water thoroughly once before sowing, and then sow 2 to 3 bean seeds in each hole.

In this way, the bean seeds can germinate and grow under suitable soil moisture and temperature conditions, which helps to improve the germination rate and the robustness of the seedlings.

2. Bean seedling cultivation method

1. Seed selection

Choose healthy seeds that are free of pests and diseases. After drying them for 1-2 days, soak them in formalin for 20 minutes to disinfect them, and then rinse them clean.

2. Planting

Choose land with loose and fertile soil for seedling cultivation. After digging the hole, place 3-5 seeds in the hole and cover it with a thin layer of soil.

3. Maintenance

About 4 days after sowing, the bean seedlings will emerge. If ground covering is used, it needs to be removed in time to enhance ventilation and air permeability.

4. Seedling management

During the seedling stage, attention should be paid to prevent excessive growth, which is mainly caused by insufficient light, high night temperatures, and excessive nitrogen fertilizer and water. Ensure appropriate light and temperature, water at the right time, and avoid excessive moisture.

5. Planting

When the bean seedlings grow to 5-6 cm high, they can be dug out and planted. After planting, water thoroughly to help the seedlings resume growth quickly.

6. Post-management

During the growth period of bean seedlings, timely top dressing and watering should be carried out to keep the soil moist. When the seedlings grow to about 30 cm, a frame needs to be built so that the beans can grow along the frame. This will help increase yield and facilitate picking.

To sum up, the seedling raising time of beans is mainly concentrated in February to March in spring, and the seedling raising methods include seed selection, sowing, maintenance, seedling management, transplanting and post-management steps. Through reasonable seedling cultivation and management, the growth quality and yield of beans can be effectively improved.
