How to fertilize Kalanchoe, symptoms of overfertilization

How to fertilize Kalanchoe, symptoms of overfertilization

1. Fertilization method

When caring for Kalanchoe, you should do a good job of fertilizing. Nitrogen fertilizer should be applied during the seedling stage to promote the growth of branches and leaves. When the flowers are about to bloom, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, which will not only promote more flowers to bloom, but also make the flowers brighter in color. Fertilization is generally carried out in spring and autumn, and the frequency of fertilization is once every half a month. Plants may stop growing in summer and winter, so fertilizer is usually not needed in these two seasons.

2. Symptoms of Overfertilization

If too much fertilizer is applied to the Kalanchoe, its root system will be affected and root burn will occur. When the roots of a plant rot, it will no longer be able to transport nutrients to the branches and leaves of the plant, and its leaves will begin to turn yellow. If left alone and not dealt with in time, the yellowing phenomenon will become more serious, and the leaves will wither and fall off.

3. How to deal with excessive fertilization

If you accidentally apply too much fertilizer to the Kalanchoe, and the situation is not serious, you can pour some water into the pot, because some fertilizers are water-soluble and the water can dilute the fertilizer in the potting soil. But if the situation is very serious, you must first remove the plant from the pot, clean the soil on the roots, and then cut off the burned roots and disinfect them. It is best to replace the soil used for previous cultivation, or disinfect it before reuse. Finally, replant the pruned plants, and apply fertilizer frequently and in small amounts in the later stage.
