How to prune potted camellia and when to prune it

1. When to prune

No matter which method is used to maintain camellia, it must be pruned after flowering. Prune the flowers that bloom in the current year in winter. If the flowers bloom in the second year, prune them in late spring after flowering. If pruning before the flowers bloom, it will result in no flowering or reduced flowering and quantity, and will also affect growth.

2. How to trim

1. There are many varieties of it, some grow fast and some grow slowly. If the growth rate is relatively fast, the length of the branches can be cut shorter when pruning, to half or one-third of the length when planting. This can promote faster germination and make the crown fuller. If the plant grows slowly, you only need to cut off the branches that are too long to ensure the beautiful shape of the plant. Do not prune it too hard.

2. If diseased branches are found, they should be cut off in time to reduce nutrient consumption. It can also increase light transmission and ventilation, and promote faster growth of healthy branches. If its crown is large, the weak branches on the inside should be cut off, and the branches that are too long and dense should be thinned out.

When pruning dense branches, be sure to cut them from the base of the plant. In addition, if pruning is done in spring, nitrogen fertilizer can be applied immediately after pruning to promote faster recovery. If you pruned in winter, you should add fertilizer again in the spring when the temperature stabilizes.
