Symptoms and treatment of edema in piglets

Piglet edema disease is a common disease in pig farms. If not treated in time, it often leads to the death of piglets, causing considerable losses to the pig farm. So what are the specific symptoms of piglet edema? How to treat it well? Let’s learn more about it below.

Symptoms of edema disease in piglets

Sick pigs often become ill suddenly, with the main symptoms being depression, loss of appetite, foaming at the mouth, diarrhea first followed by constipation, and rapid and shallow breathing at the beginning of the illness, which then becomes slow and deep. In addition, the muscles tremble and twitch, the limbs make swimming movements, there is groaning, the limbs are weak, and there is ataxia. In addition, edema is a special symptom of this disease, which is common in the subcutaneous part of the face, eyelids, conjunctiva, gums, neck, and abdomen. The course of the disease can be as short as a few hours, usually 1 to 2 days, but can also be as long as 7 days or more, with a mortality rate of about 90%.

Treatment of edema in piglets

1. Preventive measures

The first thing is to strengthen feeding management, prepare feed reasonably, pay attention to pen hygiene, and then, we use: Junmie Taibao, disinfect the pens every day, reduce or eliminate piglet stress, and isolate and treat them in time after the onset of the disease. We can also add larger doses of zinc to the feed of lactating sows, adding 50 mg of zinc per kilogram of feed, which can effectively prevent the occurrence of this disease.

2. Medication regimen

(1) Furazolidone: 0.2-0.5 g per piglet, twice a day, orally, for 2-3 days.

(2) Mix 1 gram of streptomycin with 50-100 mg of hydrocortisone and take orally once a day for 3 consecutive days; or inject intramuscularly in 2 divided doses.

(3) 800,000 to 1,000,000 international units of penicillin, injected intramuscularly once, 3 to 4 times a day, for 3 consecutive days.

(4) Mix 1 gram of sulfathiazole, 0.5 gram of sulfamethoxazole, and 0.5 gram of sodium bicarbonate evenly into the feed and feed it once in the morning and evening. Three days is a course of treatment. After 10 days, feed another course of treatment.

(5) 15-30 ml of 5% sulfadiazine sodium, injected intramuscularly once, twice a day, for 2 consecutive days.

In general, the mortality rate of piglet edema is very high. Farmers must recognize its specific symptoms, identify the cause, and take active prevention and treatment measures. This is the only way to effectively reduce the harm of piglet edema, thereby ensuring the survival rate of piglets and improving the breeding efficiency of pig farms.
