Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Pot soil selection

African violets like fertile, loose leaf mold. You can use a general flower soil containing leaf mold or a homemade soil mix to grow African violets. Be careful not to choose a flowerpot that is too big or too deep. Usually, for a standard pansy, the diameter of the flowerpot should be around 6-10cm.

2. Key points of temperature and light

It likes warm, humid and semi-shady environment. It is afraid of strong light and high temperature in summer. The suitable temperature for production is 16-24℃. In terms of light, African violets prefer a semi-shaded and diffused light environment and do not like direct sunlight. You can usually place it in the east-west balcony, south balcony, bright living room and other places at home for maintenance.

3. Reasonable watering

African violets are relatively resistant to moisture, so keep the soil moist. The temperature in early spring is relatively low, so do not water too much to avoid stem and leaf rot. In summer, it is better to water in the evening. Water more often and increase the air humidity in the surrounding environment by spraying water. However, be careful to avoid splashing too much water on the leaves when spraying water.

4. Apply fertilizer at the right time

African violets are best treated with fertilizers rich in phosphorus and potassium. It is best to apply fertilizer every 7-10 days. Applying small amounts of fertilizer frequently will help growth. However, during the winter when the temperature is low and the growth is slow, and during the hot summer period, there is no need to fertilize it to avoid fertilizer damage.

5. Reproduction method

Cutting is one of the commonly used propagation methods for African violets, mainly using leaf cuttings. After the flowers bloom, select strong and full leaves, leaving a 2 cm petiole when cutting them, let them dry slightly, and then insert them into the sand bed. During the cutting process, the air humidity should be maintained at a high level and the room temperature should be maintained at 18-24℃. After about 3 weeks, the leaf cuttings will take root.

6. Pest and disease control

Under high temperature and high humidity conditions, African violets are prone to wilt, powdery mildew and leaf rot. You can spray or pour 1000 times diluted 10% antibacterial agent 401 acetic acid solution into the potting soil. In terms of insect pests, scale insects and red spiders often harm African violets during the growing period. They can be killed by spraying 1000 times diluted 40% oxydemeton-methyl emulsifiable concentrate.

In general, African violets are easy to grow and survive, and are not picky about environmental conditions, so many flower lovers love to grow them. However, if you want to grow African violets well, you still have to master the above care methods.
