Will lavender grow new branches after it becomes woody? Lavender woody pruning

1. Are there any new branches growing?

After the lavender becomes lignified, if it develops well, new branches will grow at the bottom, but they are generally difficult to see. It is a deciduous shrub, so lignification is a normal phenomenon. The process of lignification can be slowed down by pruning, but it cannot be avoided completely. Lignification has little effect on the growth of the plant, except that the leaves at the bottom will fall off, reducing its ornamental value.

2. Woody pruning

If you want to prevent lavender from becoming lignified, you must first top it. Generally, the top buds should be removed when it grows to about 10 cm. This way, nutrients will not be supplied to the top all the time, thus avoiding the lignification of the stems. In addition, it is necessary to trim it regularly, generally once a week, and each time you can trim 0.5 cm.

3. Other Preventions

1. Reduce light: Lavender likes light, but long-term exposure to light will accelerate the lignification of the plant. Therefore, the light exposure time should be controlled every day. Just 6 hours of light can meet its growth needs. If it is summer, you should also provide it with appropriate shade to avoid exposure to the sun, and just expose it to light every morning or evening.

2. Increase ventilation: Another reason that causes lavender to become lignified is poor ventilation, especially poor ventilation at the roots, which can easily cause its leaves to fall off and the stems to gradually become lignified. Therefore, be sure to place the plant in a place with good air circulation, and use loose and fertile soil, which is also conducive to root breathing.
