How to determine whether pigs have blue ear disease?

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, also known as blue ear disease , is classified as a Category II infectious disease in China. It poses a serious threat to pig production and can be called the number one killer in pig farms. Therefore, its prevention and control must be taken seriously. So how do you determine whether a pig has blue ear disease? Let’s learn more about it below.

How to determine whether pigs have blue ear disease?

Whether pigs have blue ear disease can be judged by the following methods:

1. Observe the pig's ears: The most common symptoms of blue ear disease are inflammation, swelling, and bluish ears. In severe cases, there may also be symptoms such as necrosis and falling of the ear shell.

2. Observe the pigs' breathing condition: Pigs with blue ear disease have rapid breathing and wheezing, and in severe cases may also have symptoms such as coughing and sneezing.

3. Observe the body temperature of pigs: Pigs with blue ear disease have elevated body temperature and may have a fever.

4. Observe the mental state of the pigs: Pigs with blue ear disease are listless, have poor appetite, and have reduced activity.

If the above symptoms appear, the affected pigs need to be isolated immediately and a veterinarian should be consulted for diagnosis and treatment in a timely manner.

How to prevent blue ear disease in pigs?

1. Scientific introduction

Adhere to self-breeding and self-feeding, establish a stable breeding pig herd, and do not introduce new breeds easily. If new pigs are to be introduced, serological testing should be carried out to prevent positive pigs from entering. They should be isolated for 4-5 weeks before introduction and monitored closely, and only healthy pigs can be mixed with the group.

2. Disinfection and immunization

Achieve "all in, all out"; establish a complete biosafety system, and regularly disinfect pig houses, pens, environment, utensils, equipment, etc.; harmlessly treat feces and waste, and minimize and control the harm caused by pathogens to pig farms as much as possible. At the same time, depending on the disease situation in this farm and surrounding farms, all pigs will be vaccinated with the highly pathogenic porcine blue ear disease inactivated vaccine approved by the state.

3. Strengthen feeding

Add 1 kg of Ping An Kang to every 500 kg of feed in the daily diet of pigs, and feed it continuously for 1 week. Supplement keratin fiber and glucose in the drinking water, or use 500 g/500 kg of antiviral powder No. 1, mixed with 10% florfenicol at 200×10-6, and feed it continuously for 5 days. This can greatly reduce the outbreak of this disease in pigs.

4. Treatment methods

If the symptoms of the sick pigs are complicated, they can be injected with antibacterial booster injections + Hulk; for mixing feed, you can use Menyili + Pingchuansu (Tilmicosin premix), and the amount can be doubled.

In general, to determine whether there is blue ear disease in a pig farm, we must start with its major disease characteristics. If similar symptoms are found, immunization and treatment should be carried out as soon as possible in accordance with the requirements of the local veterinary department.
