High-yield cultivation technology of cucumber

Cucumber, as a common vegetable , can be found everywhere in our daily life. It is rich in nutrients, contains a variety of vitamins and minerals, and has extremely high edible value, so it is very popular among consumers in the market. Cucumbers are widely grown in all parts of China, north and south. However, many people encounter problems with low yield and poor quality when growing cucumbers , which leads to reduced planting benefits. Let’s learn together the high-yield cultivation technology of cucumbers.

1. Cultivate strong seedlings

1. Seed treatment

In order to avoid problems such as slow and uneven germination and high incidence of diseases caused by direct sowing of cucumber seeds, disinfection and germination treatments are required before sowing.

Seed disinfection: Select cucumber seeds with full grains (they can be exposed to the sun for 1-2 days in advance to increase activity), soak them in 55℃ warm water for 10 minutes, stirring constantly to maintain the water temperature. After soaking, scrub off the mucus on the surface of the seeds to kill the germs. If the planting area is large, soak the seeds in 100 times formalin solution for 15 minutes, then rinse them with water.

Seed germination: Soak the processed seeds in clean water for 3-4 hours, then wrap them with wet gauze and place them in an environment of about 25℃ for germination. When 60% of the seeds turn white, they can be sown.

2. Prepare nutrient soil

The seedbed can be made of 6 parts of fertile garden soil, 4 parts of decomposed farmyard manure (such as pig manure, horse manure, etc.), add appropriate amount of wood ash and triple compound fertilizer , mix well and make nutrient soil. This kind of soil has high organic matter content and is loose, which is conducive to the development of seedling root system.

2. Fumigation Disinfection in Greenhouses

Disinfect the greenhouse half a month before planting cucumber seedlings. You can use 200 ml of DDT, add 1.5 kg of sulfur, mix it with sawdust, and ignite it. Keep it in the greenhouse for 1-2 days to effectively kill bacteria and insect eggs and reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests.

3. Control the planting density

When the cucumber seedlings have 4-5 true leaves and the average daily temperature is stable above 15℃, they can be transplanted. Choose soil rich in organic matter and apply 2,000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure and 30 kg of triple compound fertilizer per mu as base fertilizer. Control the density well to avoid overcrowding which may lead to falling flowers and fruits and high incidence of diseases and pests.

High-bed cultivation is adopted, with bed height of more than 15 cm and bed width of 1.2 meters. Two rows are planted in each bed, with row spacing of 60 cm, plant spacing of 30 cm, and bed furrow width of 30 cm. It is best to cover the ground with film, which is beneficial to increase soil temperature, retain moisture, prevent weeds, improve soil structure, and reduce diseases and insect pests.

4. Scientific watering

Cucumbers like moist soil, and scientific watering can increase yield. The first three waters are crucial: water for planting, water for seedling growth, and water for flowering and fruiting. During the peak melon season, heavy watering is required, once every 5 days, to ensure yield and quality.

5. Multiple topdressing

Cucumbers have a strong ability to bear fruit and require sufficient nutrients. In addition to base fertilizer, it is also necessary to apply seedling fertilizer 10 days after planting, apply triple compound fertilizer during the flowering and fruiting period, and spray foliar fertilizer during the peak fruit-bearing period. Be careful not to use too much nitrogen fertilizer to avoid excessive plant growth.

6. Pruning, pinching and trellising

Pruning and pinching can improve ventilation and light transmission, reduce nutrient waste, and promote more flowering and fruiting. Trellising is beneficial to plant growth and is generally done 10 days after planting.

To sum up, these are the key points to pay attention to in cucumber cultivation . Friends who grow cucumbers can pay more attention to these details. Sometimes the failure to achieve high yields of cucumbers in your own home may be related to inadequate management.
