Eight taboos for hamster breeding

Eight taboos for hamster breeding

Hamsters are a general term for animals of the hamster subfamily. Although they look a bit similar to mice, they are two completely different animals. Hamsters are solitary animals and are popular domestic pets because of their cute small appearance and lively personality. So what are the taboos to pay attention to when raising hamsters? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Avoid direct contact with the sun

Do not keep hamsters in direct contact with the sun. Hamsters like dark and cool places. The glaring sunlight will not only damage the hamster's eyesight, but also make them feel hot and restless. So, when summer comes, use heat sinks or marble to cool them down.

2. Avoid feeding food to humans

Human food contains too much oil, salt and sugar. These delicious seasonings for humans will increase the burden on hamsters' bodies. The foods that hamsters can generally eat include mouse food, grains, nuts, etc. In addition, some fruits can also be eaten, such as apples , pears, watermelons , etc.

3. Avoid washing your body with water

Hamsters have sensitive skin, and washing with water may cause skin irritation or other health problems. If cleaning is required, special bath sand can be used.

4. Avoid closing cages

One mouse per cage is the most basic breeding requirement. Hamsters have a strong sense of territory, and if they are kept together, it is easy for them to fight and die, so it is forbidden to keep them in the same cage.

5. Avoid using inappropriate cages

Keeping a hamster in an inappropriate cage is not conducive to its healthy growth, such as a cage that is too small or too tight. Hamsters need adequate space and activity to stay healthy. To raise hamsters, the minimum requirement for the cage should be a 47cm basic cage, 47cm long, 30cm wide, and about 30cm high.

6. Avoid feeding raw water

Do not feed raw water to hamsters as it can cause diarrhea or even death. You can let the boiled water cool down and then give it to the hamster to drink. Do not add raw water or high-temperature boiled water. As for water quality, you can choose boiled water, purified water, or mineral water.

7. Avoid disturbing hibernation

Domestic hamsters also hibernate in winter. At this time, the hamsters should be allowed to rest quietly in a warm room, avoiding disturbing them and allowing them to have enough rest time.

8. Avoid using newspapers as padding

The ink on newspaper may have adverse effects on the health of hamsters and should not be used as bedding. The litter should be wood chips or paper cotton, or cat litter can be used as litter.

The above is an introduction to the eight taboos regarding hamster breeding. In short, although hamsters are not expensive and many people like to buy them to raise, there are many things to pay attention to, and the slightest inappropriate handling may lead to death. Therefore, if you decide to raise it, you must be responsible for it, learn the relevant breeding methods, and raise it well.
