How to germinate and plant mango seeds?

Mango is a famous tropical fruit and is known as the "king of tropical fruits". Mangoes can not only be grown as seedlings and transplanted, but can also be planted directly from seeds. However, before planting, it is best to germinate the seeds first so that the seed survival rate is higher. So how do you germinate and plant mango seeds ? Let’s take a look with the editor below.

1. Prepare seeds

Choose a ripe, plump, pest-free mango, and leave the core after eating. Use a knife to scrape any remaining pulp from the core, then wash and dry. Pry open the shell of the fruit pit and carefully remove the seed germ. Be careful not to damage the seeds when peeling.

2. Germination treatment

Soak the removed seed embryos in clean water, and make sure to change the water every day to keep the water clean. The soaking time is generally 3-4 days, until the seeds show small sprouts. If soaked for too long, the seeds may rot. When the seeds show bud points, you can take them out and put them in moist sphagnum moss or paper towels to germinate, maintain a moist environment, and continue germination for about 4 days until the seeds germinate.

3. Choose potting soil

Choose a good-sized pot with good drainage. Since mango potted plants are relatively tall, it is recommended to choose a tall pot. Prepare loose, fertile, well-drained nutrient soil. You can mix some sand or granular soil to increase drainage.

4. Planting and germination

Add a layer of granular material, such as pebbles or clay, to the bottom of the pot to improve drainage. Fill the prepared nutrient soil into the flowerpot, filling it to about 2-3 cm below the bottom of the pot. Plant the germinated mango seeds into the soil with the embryo facing downwards, until the seeds are halfway buried. Be careful not to bury the seeds too deep as this will affect germination. Use a watering can to keep the soil moist. Then place it in a cool and ventilated place indoors.

5. Water and fertilizer management

During the acclimatization period, keep the soil moist and spray water every 2 days or so. After that, you can place it in a bright environment for maintenance, but avoid direct sunlight. During the growth of mango seedlings , some thin fertilizer can be applied to promote their growth. But be careful not to over-fertilize to avoid burning the roots. During the flowering season, the application of nitrogen fertilizer should be appropriately reduced, and the application of high-phosphorus and potassium fertilizer should be increased to promote flower bud differentiation and fruit development.

6. Management points

Mango saplings need as much sunlight and heat as possible to thrive. Generally, 8-10 hours of sunlight are required each day. As the seedlings grow, the light intensity and time can be gradually increased. Mango is a tropical fruit that likes warmth and fears cold. Generally, the annual average temperature is required to be above 21°C, and the average temperature of the coldest month should not be lower than 15°C. In cold areas in winter, you need to pay attention to keeping warm.

The above is an introduction to how to germinate and plant mango seeds. If you want the mango seedlings to bear fruit, you need to wait for them to grow to a certain age and carry out proper maintenance and management. During the planting process, pay attention to the growth of mango seedlings, and promptly detect and deal with diseases and pests.
