Grafting Technique of Magnolia

Grafting Technique of Magnolia

1. Time Selection

Magnolia can be grafted by budding, which is best done in September and October each year. At this time, the temperature is maintained above 20 degrees Celsius, which is a relatively suitable temperature, conducive to germination and growth, and it is also easier to recover later.

2. Preparation

Before grafting, you need to prepare the rootstock and scion. The rootstock can be a purple magnolia of the same family, or a young magnolia tree with a base diameter of about 1-2 cm. Choose a mother magnolia plant with good growth condition, cut disease-free and insect-free branches from the sunny side, and require the axillary buds on it to be full. Remove all leaves from the top of the scion, leaving part of the petiole. Make a horizontal cut from below the bud eye of the scion, about 0.8 cm away, all the way to the woody part, and cut off the buds from the top. The rootstock part also needs to be processed, and the cortex of similar size should be cut off at the grafting position.

3. Start grafting

After the preparation work is completed, grafting needs to be done immediately. The bud should be embedded in the position where the bark of the rootstock has been removed, and then tightly wrapped with tape. It should not be tied too tight or too loose.

4. Post-maintenance

After tying, cover the outside with plastic wrap to prevent rain and affect survival. After the grafting is successful, pay attention to maintenance. After both have grown well, you can remove the binding.
